ART I WOULD CHOOSE

Designing a Cohesive and Eclectic Living Room

I have always imagined that when I am older my walls will be filled with art I've collected throughout my life. I would have various art pieces of different monetary value that come together to tell the story of my life, places I've traveled, my hobbies and interests and photographs of family and friends. I think the home should serve as a sanctuary, the place where you feel most comfortable. I couldn't imagine a better way to achieve this feeling than to fill my walls with treasures that bring a smile and a memory whenever I pass them by. This is why I chose a cohesive eclectic theme for my three living room art pieces; each piece has a value to me personally that speaks to my life, and each piece comes together for a cohesive look that is pleasing to both the eye and the soul.

I love the look of quilts, I think they work beautifully for a bedspread, but they can be equally as beautiful as wall art. I chose this piece to have as the anchor piece in my dream living room, I think something as detailed as this with so many textures commands attention. My husband and I visited this lighthouse in Portland, Maine in 2023 it's a beautiful memory, we spent an entire day exploring the lighthouse grounds and taking photos. We visited in November, on a breezy cold day, after hours of photos and walking we couldn't order an Uber, Lyft, or taxi without an anticipated wait time of more than an hour! We decided that despite our feet being tired and our stomachs grumbling we would walk all the way back to our vacation rental, we walked for an additional 3 miles before finally succumbing to the long wait time for an Uber and ordering some pastries at a bakery we came across. It's a funny memory to look back on and having a reminder of such a great time would be the perfect piece for a dream living room. Additionally, the colors in this quilt are very vibrant and I think they work very well with the other pieces I have chosen, the value used in this quilt add extra dimension to the image with various textures and fabric designs.

This cute little bear is a small piece, but I think it has a lot of fun personality and the design of the flower and bear are reminiscent of folk art which adds to the cozy feeling I want for this living room. The bright blue is complimentary to the other colors in the additional works of art in my living room. The negative space is what creates the details in this image which is a good contrast to the quilt. The quilt has so many different textures and colors and this little bear has just one color. Its design is simplistic which adds balance to the living room. I chose this piece because it reminded me of the nickname my mom has for me, "Caitie Bear".

This piece spoke to me because forget-me-nots are my grandma's favorite flower and I grew up seeing them in her backyard where she'd tell me stories about how these flowers were really little fairy hats. I think that this piece is amazing, it was meticulously crafted with paper to create a three-dimensional look. The form in this piece is easily achieved through this method of adding little pieces of paper to create this three-dimensional look, the textures of each flower are smooth but the greenery and stems around the flowers have creases giving the image added depth.

  1. When I first saw the scenario that you had created =, I was excited to see the different art you would choose. I think that you made it more personal and expressed a specific feeling. I loved how you explained your plans for your future walls in your living room. Having them filled with all of your memories and experiences is so meaningful. I have to agree that the home should feel like a sanctuary. This left me having a relatable feeling to everything that you were discussing.

The memory of traveling to Portland gave the lighthouse quilt a meaning. By having a meaning to it with the memory, it made it more than just a decorative piece of art. The colors that are in this quilt work well with the other pieces of art that were chosen. Being able to have a piece of art that has a funny memory of it will always make you smile every time you see it hanging on your wall. I thought that the Little Blue Bear having the nickname Caitie Bear was super cute. I love the color scheme that you have chosen to go with in all your art choices. This little bear has a cozy feeling about it. When I saw that you picked forget-me-nots, I was excited. I love forget-me-nots. I love the fact that there is a childhood memory attached to this piece of art. Each piece of art that you chose is amazing and they will look great on your future living room wall!

One thing that I observed is how would the size affect where you would place these items? The quilt is quite large and would need to go into a bigger, wider open area of the wall. Where the little bear is smaller. Would you place the bear somewhere where everyone that comes into the living room would be able to see it right away? The quilt for sure would be seen by anyone that passes by it due to its size no matter where it was placed.

I truly enjoyed seeing the different pieces of art that you would choose for your living room wall. Well Done!

Introduction

Hello everyone!       My name is Caitie, and I am so excited to be starting this course and further exploring my interests in art. I am in my second year at University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am majoring in social work and minoring in art. Currently, I live in Montana and have only taken online courses through UAF. I am really looking forward to this class and all that we will be learning through the course of the semester.       I would consider myself more of an admirer of art than an artist myself, but I still enjoy drawing and painting in my free time. I love when I am able visit art museums and galleries especially when traveling. My favorite way to experience art is through interactive exhibits and galleries such as Meow Wolf. My fiancé and I have been able to go to Meow Wolf exhibits in Denver, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico. A few of my favorite artists are Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, and Carvaggio.  The W...

Art Analysis of "The Swing" by Jean-Honoré Fragonard

Art Analysis of " The Swing " by  Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1767)      The Swing | painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard | Britannica      " The Swing " by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1767) is a perfect example of Rococo style which was highly influential at the time. Rococo influenced architecture, decorations, and of course art. Rococo originated in Paris, France but quickly gained popularity throughout Europe. Rococo is characterized by its ornamentation, elegance, and symmetry. It is a direct juxtaposition of the previous trending style Baroque, which was bold, dark, and dramatic.   Baroque vs Rococo - What's the Difference? - Artist " The Swing " has a unique and intriguing history, at the time this would have been an incredibly scandalous painting. This depiction of the woman now wouldn't be thought of as scandalous, but in 1767 it was, her ankles are showing, and her dress is painted in such a way so that the man in the left corner appears ...

Art and Religion

Exploring Christianity Through Art Art serves many purposes in life, from how you choose to design a space in your home to viewing famous works at a prestigious gallery. Art is intertwined with life. Art can also foster an understanding of historical events, and this is one of the reasons art has been so influential in Christianity. Art can bridge the gap in the understanding of biblical texts, through beautiful imagery in stained glass to frescos that cover massive ceilings the artists behind these works have moved people for millenniums. In my analysis I will be exploring three works of art that each focus on Christianity, " The Creation of Adam " (1511- 1512) by  Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarotti Simoni (1475 – 1564), " Last Supper " (1495-1498) by Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519), and " Christ Crucified " (1632) by  Diego Rodríguez de Silva y  Velázquez (1599-1660).  Michelangelo’s painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City, Rome, Italy;  Sist...
